When my period starts all I can think of is – smoking marijuana. Some women might consider me crazy, but I rather choose marijuana instead of pain killers.
Every month I and millions of other women (I feel your pain, my period sisters all around the world!) go through this red hell.
Not only we suffer mood swings and cramps, but also we bleed from our vaginas. The blood is just a side effect of mucosal tissues coming off from the inner lining of the uterus. Sounds pretty rad.
While the bleeding part may sound horrifying, the blood loss is insignificant. Every woman on average bleeds out 35 milliliters of blood. If you want a mental image of that, imagine around 2.5 tablespoons of blood.
Periods are just a regular part of a menstrual cycle which is regulated by the rise and fall of hormones. On average the cycle lasts for 28 days. As a result of every cycle, the lining of the uterus thickens. A small egg that plays the key role in pregnancy grows. The egg is released from an ovary approximately at mid-cycle. If the egg hasn’t been fertilized, it just gets flushed out of the uterus together with the menstrual tissue during the period. That’s how nature works.
But let’s see how exactly nature’s magical herb can help during these bloody days of every women’s life.
Marijuana Pain Relief for Menstrual Cramps
Two of the things I hate the most about periods is bleeding and cramps during the first days of my period. I used to have cramps so strong that occasionally I would take a sick leave for a day.
Even the doctor of British Queen Victoria, William B. O’Shaughnessy, gave her majesty a cannabis tincture to alleviate menstrual cramps.
And it’s no surprise. Weed is great for relieving almost any pain. It’s psychoactive compound THC serves as a strong painkiller and also as a substance that blocks the nerves from transmitting the pain signals at all.
But those women who want to relieve pain without getting high, strains high in CBD or CBD oil can be a great solution.
Relief for the Symptoms of PMS
Not only the bleeding and cramps are terrible, there’s yet another circle of hell many women go through even before the real hell begins.
It’s Post Menstrual Syndrome or PMS for short. I bet many men know this and can agree that it’s not only the women, it’s also a week or so of hell for them too. Indirectly though. But can quickly be directed to men because women get irritable, tired, and want to be alone. And sometimes men are the ones that sink in the storms created by their over-emotional women.
Blame hormones. During the PMS fluctuations in progesterone and other hormones can lead to a variety of symptoms like bloating, fatigue, pain, mood swings, and irritability.
Although THC has some effect on the hormones by suppressing them, these processes haven’t been fully researched. However, cannabis has positive anti-anxiety and relaxant effects that can at least help with the irritability, mood swings and pain during the PMS.
Does smoking weed affect your period?
I think that the way how marijuana use daily affects the menstrual cycle depends from women to women. I smoke daily and my period is fairly regular.
However, I have read many cases from women who smoke daily or use marijuana in any other ways complaining about having irregular periods or even missing them. Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that lots of weed indeed can result in missed periods.
Although Medic8 claims that use of marijuana can double as a birth control, I wouldn’t take such a claim seriously. There’s always a slight chance of getting pregnant. Marijuana is not a condom, no matter how it affects us. Both women who want babies and women who don’t should be precautious and observe the effects of marijuana on their reproductive while using marijuana daily. This passage does not suggest changing your menstrual cycle in any way.
Is smoking weed on a period a good idea? I do suggest toking when in unbearable pain. Women obviously can gain numerous health benefits of marijuana but using it smart.
Smoke with care!
