Sometimes I want special vibes, sometimes I want to be a forester and run through the moss on high heels, and to be close to the nature, go into the wilderness, and melt together with the scenery and the fresh air. From time to time, I gather my friends and we go hiking in the woods at the weekend, cook on the campfire, smoke Marijuana, and enjoy the magical silence and atmosphere of the surroundings.
Although, I’m not very experienced in hiking, I love nature and getting High, so for me spending time outdoors and smoking Weed is the same as hiking. I’m a Stoner Hiker.
This time I’m not going to talk about my Stoner Hiker’s experience, instead, I decided to have a chat with a friend of mine, Jani, to get some useful tips about hiking while High because he has more experience doing both – actual hiking and being Stoned.
How experienced are you in hiking?
Since I was eight years old, I was doing a lot of stuff together with my father – running in a forest, trail running, fishing with a boat, without the boat, camping outdoors for three or four days. I started early.
And how experienced are you in smoking weed?
Less than in hiking. Actually, I have never thought about it before. I started smoking weed when I was about fifteen years old, and I became a Daily Stoner around eighteen, so I have hiked more than I have smoked. Hopefully. (Laughs.)
How did you decide to do both at a time?
When you’re a daily stoner, you do both things at a time all the time with all the things. And what’s a better place than a forest, nature… However, smoking weed when you’re hiking is an extra, that’s why you should plan your route carefully, reducing the distance or giving a little bit more time for walking, because, let’s be honest, Marijuana is not speed. (Laughs.)
And how smoking helps your hiking process?
Some people believe that it helps to relieve muscle tension. For me it helps not to give a fuck about small problems during the hike because it’s important not to exaggerate them.
Do other hikers smoke too? Maybe you’re a group of stoner hikers…
Smoking weed really depends on the person. Not all people with whom I have hiked, smoke weed, but it’s always nicer to hike with people with whom you’re on the same wavelength. Personally, I have difficulties to hike with people who want to get drunk in the evening, and they probably don’t enjoy my company either.
When I know that people who smoke are going to the same event I am, it’s always an advantage because it’s more fun. And if you’re going together to a forest to relax, everything is happening very naturally because they have the same thinking as you do. They don’t think that you’re an antisocial person because you don’t drink and that you’re a junkie because you smoke. However, I think that I have to meet these like-minded people naturally, I’m not planning on creating a Facebook community. (Laughs.)
What is the main gear of a stoner hiker?
Definitely, strain. (Laughs.) Nobody wants to walk thirty kilometers when it’s hot, with a huge and heavy backpack while smoking a super strong Indica. It’s better to take a light Sativa.
I saw your photos on FB from your last hike, and I was wondering about how it is to hike during winter.
In winter it is easier to walk because it’s not that hot, but again it’s complicated because you have more clothes, you get tired easier. It was -10°C (14°F), so it was difficult to drink very cold water that is why I didn’t drink a lot of water, and that is why I got a headache the next day.
Headache doesn’t sound good at all, but did you smoke weed during this hike?
Yeah, I smoked, and I smoked, using pipe mostly, because it was complicated to roll a joint because next to our campfire it was -5°C (23°F), without the fire it was -10°C (14°F), but in the tent – 0°C (32°F) , and you don’t get a lot when you’re cold. (Laughs.) The only thing – it all got a little bit funnier, and also, as I was in a good mood, I didn’t feel the high a lot. Also, I think I wasn’t smoking a lot. Less than usually, because of the new atmosphere, I think.
You should have smoked more or tried to get high in a different way. Have you ever used any Marijuana Infused Edibles while hiking?
Yes. Sometimes at the end of the day when I want to camp, I eat some edibles and go to sleep, but I prefer to smoke when I hike, because you can never know how it’s going to be with edibles, especially when they’re homemade.
By the way, how do you deal with Munchies while hiking?
The feeling of munchies happens because weed helps insulin to work more effectively. Insulin burns glucose, which is pure energy, and that is why feeling of hunger appears. Every person feels munchies differently. Anyway, nobody should try to endure this feeling for too long because munchies take away energy. When I hike I usually have a Snickers or an energy bar with me. From my experience, nuts and raisins also help – it’s better to eat something light because munchies are like a fake hunger.
How do you manage to keep your energy levels stable?
I try to get as much sleep as possible, and the same as with the munchies, I eat an energy bar or a chocolate.
What’s the main reason of getting high while hiking?
Smoking weed and hiking are just the things that people like to do without any explanations – to be outdoors, to get this primitive joy, and to get high.
What about possible problems that smoking weed can cause while hiking?
I think that a stoner needs more water, it might be easy to get lost, you can get tired faster. So, when you’re smoking outdoors, you need to be more responsible.
Are you a responsible stoner hiker?
I’m responsible in general. And when I’m high, I’m less responsible, but still understanding that I should be responsible.
And what are your suggestions for other stoner hikers?
Make sure that the weather is going to be nice with clear sky, that you have enough time to enjoy the nature… Also, prepare, train your body, smoke at home. (Laughs.) Smoke a lot at home, smoke every day. (Continues laughing.) And start smoking during the lunch break when you can enjoy your food, so you wouldn’t have to walk stoned. Definitely, not in the morning. Also, it’s better to smoke during the breaks in between the walking, not spontaneously and whenever you want. And you shouldn’t forget to take extra water, so you could avoid a situation when you, for example, have only 200ml of water. Yeah, and take chewing gum.
Yes, chewing gum is a good thing to have when you’re having a cottonmouth aka Sahara desert in your mouth. Anyway, thank you for your time, and may the weed be with you on your future hikes.
As great and challenging stoner hiking sounds, it requires extra responsibility from a stoner. No matter how baked you are into the wilderness, stick to your fellow stoner hikers or the hiker group, and don’t get yourself lost, and drink plenty of water. Remember, the only things you can afford to get lost in are the feelings, vibes, the atmosphere and the high. Happy and safe hiking, wherever your stoner’s feet may take you!
