How to choose appropriate LED grow lights

LED grow lights.
I choose LED Grow Lights and recommend that to you as well. I explained my choice in this article, a look into LED vs CFL vs HPS grow lights.
To sum up – LED grow lights are cheaper, easier and more long lasting in the long run comparing to other types of lights. Your Marijuana plants will be very grateful for such choice.
Light burn on Marijuana plants.
I guess that every grower at least once has experienced mishaps while taking care of their Marijuana plants. One of the most common is a Light Burn. Any plant in general can only endure a certain amount of light. The same goes for Marijuana. Too much of light or heat, or both, and the lush green colors of your dear plant will change to yellow, red, or even purple.
With the light burn the Marijuana plants can also have brown spots on leaves. Quite often the burn damages tips and edges, leaving only margins of the leaves green. If you spot weird discoloration on the leaves of your plant right under the grow lights, they can be too bright for the plant and you should immediately put the lights further away or remove some of them.
If it’s impossible to move the grow lights further away, you should bend the plant away from the light source. In the worst case, you can think of cutting its top, but that can only be done when the Marijuana plant is in the Vegetative Stage.
Comparing LED grow Lights to grow Tent size.
Anyway, to grow your Weed babies strong, bushy, tasty and big, it is crucial to choose the right power of lights taking into account the size of your Grow Tent. Using the power of lamps to your advantage will certainly help you not only to avoid the Light Burn, but also you won’t have to deal with removing or resetting the height of the grow lights now and then.
I think this table is an awesome hack for Marijuana Growers, both experienced ones, beginners, and dummies. Obviously, the smaller the tent, the lesser the power of the grow lights. The bigger the tent, the higher power of the lights.
LED power (W) | Size of the tent (cm) | Size of the tent (m2) | Size of the tent (feet) |
---|---|---|---|
45w | 30×30 cm | 0.09m2 | 1×1 feet |
70w | 40×40 cm | 0.16m2 | 1.3×1.3 feet |
115w | 50×50 | 0.25m2 | 1.7×1.7 feet |
180w | 60×60 | 0.35m2 | 2×2 feet |
360w | 90×90 | 0.80m2 | 3×3 feet |
530w | 110×110 | 1.2m2 | 3.5×3.5 feet |
750w | 130×130 | 1.7m2 | 4×4 feet |
If you still feel that the grow lights might burn your Marijuana plants, you can use your hand to measure the right height of the lights. If it’s too hot for your hand, it’s certainly not good for the plant either.
Take care of your plants and choose the power (wattage) of lights carefully because the only thing you want to see burning is the buds in your pipe!
